Working with Millions & Thousands
Drop the zeros, calculate with small numbers, restore scale.
When to use
Any operation involving large numbers (millions, thousands).
Steps
- 1.Express in shorthand: 3,840,000 → 3.84M or 384 x 10K
- 2.Perform the operation on the simplified number
- 3.Restore the scale
Example: 3,840,000 / 4
3,840,000 = 384 x 10,000
384 / 4 = 96
96 x 10,000 = 960,000
Mental approach
Always talk in 'M' or 'K'. '3.84M / 4 = 0.96M = 960K'.
Pen & paper approach
Write the number in shorthand, calculate, convert back.
Tips
- •Practice converting: 9,150,000 = 9.15M = 915 x 10K
- •When multiplying: 9.15M x 9 ≈ 9 x 9 = 81M, then adjust
- •Keep track of zeros — off by 10x is a common mistake
Try it yourself
4,500,000 x 3
7,200,000 / 8
2,800,000 x 5
